Downsizing from your Family Home
By: Realtor David van benthem
Downsizing from a family home can and will likely be an emotional and difficult process. A home can very easily become an extension of your family; you have grown and watched others grow within the walls, memories and significant events have transpired under the roof.
It is normal to become attached to your family home, so moving isn’t always easy; however, at some point it does become a reality. Here is some advice to make the process easier:
Plan ahead: Create a timeline starting with when you would like to move, budget the costs involved in buying a new home, and the costs involved in selling your current home.
Getting organized: Start the decluttering process early (it will take longer than expected). Sort belongings and decide what you would like to keep, hand down, give away, sell, or discard. If you have family available, they will be valuable resource for support and assistance.
Finding a new home: Consider location and determine your needs and wants. As we age, many individuals need to reduce stairs or have bathrooms more suitable to their personal needs. What is important to your lifestyle? Access to a green space or local amenities, a common area to meet other individuals, close proximity to family?
Prepare for sale: Stage your home and make any necessary repairs that will make your home appealing to potential buyers.
