How to shake it off when your offer has been rejected
BY STEPHANIE BARON, REALTOR
It’s happened to most of us, including me.
You make an offer on a home. Before the ink is dry, you’ve mentally sold your current home, booked the movers, arranged all your furniture and enrolled the kids in their new school.
Then: Offer declined.
UGH.
There could be a million different reasons why the offer was declined, or maybe it was accepted but then fell apart on inspection or even financing.
Either way, what matters is that not getting that house broke a small part of your heart. I get it.
Here’s how to shake it off and move on:
Remember that it wasn’t meant to be. In my experience, 99.9999% of the time you end up being so relieved that the house didn’t work out. Why? Because you end up finding something that turns out to be way better. Try to have faith that a better house is around the corner.
It’s OK to take some time if you need it. Some people like to jump right back on the horse, others need to lick their wounds for a bit. Both are fine.
Consider why it didn’t work out. If you were outbid in multiple offers, talk to your realtor about what you can do to strengthen your next offer.
Going forwards, try not to get too attached to begin with. I know this is easier said than done— making an offer to purchase a home requires you to get attached enough to the home to see yourself living there! At the same time, it’s not over until it’s over, so try to keep your emotions in check.
Remember that this is all part of the process. Buying a home is a rite of passage, and it has ups and downs for everyone. It’s ok if the process is challenging. Eventually it will all become part of the great story of how you found the perfect home.
I absolutely love working with home buyers! If you want to buy a home this year, please give me a call, I would love to help: 204 232-6495.
